Stevens Light Van rescued in Scotland
Confuscius said that every arduous and difficult journey started with a single step.
Well the first step was
taken
for this Stevens light van when it was hoisted from a barn in northern
Scotland where it had lain for many years and has headed south for some
much needed restoration.
It
was made under the `Stevens and Bowden Ltd, Wolverhampton` name for
which it still carries the makers plate. Bowdens manufactured Stevens
vans under license in London,
and they were made simultaneously, as in this case, in Wolverhampton.
It is chassis number 620 and engine number 620 and a reference number of `34x`.

Davids account of the collection goes like this....
You have asked how the pickup went. Well, it was quite a challenge
on it`s own. The Stevens had been in the barn resting for well over 55 years according to the next door farmer, and during this time it had slowly sunk
while the wheels rotted down. I arrived after a journey of 540 miles and had arranged with a local farmer to borrow a tractor. It was only after the tractor
had been dropped off that I realised that it was too tall to get into the barn to lift the Stevens out. A quick phone call to the landowner who suggested
"take the roof off if you need to". The roof beams were soon sawn through and the tin roof lifted away, and once this was done the tractor could get in and
start the lift. As you can see from the photos, the Stevens was on the front loader of the tractor. I had previously been into the Black Country Living
Museum with my friend Ken and measured up the three wheeler that they have there, realising with relief that it would only just fit inside my van. With
just inches to spare it was loaded. All this took nearly three hours to accomplish. After that we booked in to the local B&B and relaxed with a few pints
and haggis for tea. The next morning we drove the 540 miles back home. Quite a journey but I think it will be worth it.
I`m sure it will David and we
look forward to the restoration.
This was the van at the Cleobury Borders Classic Bike show in September 2010 and the dismantling is imminent.
